John Wheeldon
Primary Academy

Welcome to our digital prospectus. In the following pages you will get a feel for our academy and the work we do with our pupils. Once you have looked through please contact the school office on 01785 594444 to arrange an appointment to look round.

John Wheeldon is a well-established Academy that now sits under the umbrella of the Staffordshire University Academy Trust. We aim to ensure all our children achieve their full potential in an inclusive atmosphere that still provides the challenge they need to succeed.

The academy has strong community links and we particularly value our partnership with parents.

Recent changes in the school are leading to rapidly improving standards and a wide range of extra-curricular activities – particularly in Sport and Music.

In this video Mr Turner-Elkes explains the work of the school council. The council meet at least once a month where they discuss issues and make decisions about a range of matters that affect the children in the school. Recently these have included improving lunch times, litter and the new school football kit.

Sport & P.E.

At John Wheeldon we provide children with a broad and balanced curriculum of PE. Children in the foundation stage and Key Stage 1 develop fundamental skills to help them to make progress in the Key Stage 2 curriculum, through a daily session of PE.  Year groups visit our local leisure centre weekly for swimming sessions and years 4 and 6 experience outdoor and adventurous activities in residential weeks. Children in Key Stage 2 are also provided with opportunities for regular physical activity through the daily mile, active playtimes and active maths.

We offer a variety of clubs across a wide range of sports and activities during lunchtimes and after school. Our football team has already experienced success in competition this year and we enable the children to experience many opportunities to compete and interact with other pupils both in our own setting and in other settings.

Our aim is to have our children leave us at the end of year 6 with lifelong skills so that they are able to lead healthy life styles.

The Choir

This video features our school choir and other aspects of music at John Wheeldon which are overseen by our music leader, Miss West. It features our weekly choir practise where the children get to sing the songs they enjoy and have fun through music. The choir take part in a number of concerts throughout the year, within school and the local community. Children also take part in weekly instrument lessons, learning new skills on a range of instruments.

Rotakids is an exciting opportunity for our children and we are particularly proud of its impact, both on the young people involved and the local community. The club is linked to Stafford Rotary Club.

This video describes the work of Rotakids at John Wheeldon Academy. Children from Year 5 take on a two-year role where they discuss how to improve links between the school and the local community. The children have raised money for a variety of local causes over the last two years.
